  • DEPARTMENTS | Town of Remington

    Details about Remington, Indiana town governance and our parks department. TOWN DEPARTMENTS Remington Town Departments are governed by the Remington Town Council. The departments include Streets, Water, Wastewater, Police, Parks, Town Manager and Cemetery. The Fire Department is governed by a Building Services Board made up of all five town council members, and representatives from the townships which the fire department serve. Remington Town Council Remington's town government is made up of five council members elected at large. The term of office for a member is 4 years, beginning on January 1 following the election. Members of the town council must reside in town limits. Two members are elected as President and Vice-President each year. The town departments report to the town council. The council passes ordinances, resolutions, establishes salaries for town employees, pass an annual budget, and sets utility rates. Current town council members are: Susie Flickner, President; Dana Pampel, Vice-President, Bob Braaksma, Al Schambach and Jim Stewart. Town Attorney is Rebecca Goddard and Patrick Ryan. Town Clerk-Treasurer is Terri Budde 2022 Town Council Meeting Schedule Town council meetings are held the 1st Monday of each month, unless that Monday is a holiday. Meetings are held in the depot, located at 16 ES Railroad Street, at 6:30 PM. An additional meeting will be scheduled in late December to finalize claims and year end business. Town Manager The Town Manager for the Town of Remington is Jonathan Cripe. His main objective is to manage and oversee the operations of the Town, coordinating the activities of the other Town employees, and act as liaison to the Town Council, and performing duties as assigned by the Town Council. Redevelopment Commission Members of the redevelopment commission are: Steve Kinsell, Ron Wilken, Brad Ulyat, Betty Vaughan, Kathy O'Neall, and Rachel Cantrell (School Board appointee) Parks Remington has TWO great town parks to enjoy! The Original Town Park is centrally located in town near several convenience stores in case snacks or beverages are needed while you play! It is home to a large playground with multiple slides and swings for all ages and a great basketball court. It also has an open shelter with restrooms and picnic tables. The local Boy Scouts have a cabin located in the park as well. The Remington Community Park is located in the northwest part of town. With the recent addition of the SPLASH PAD, the Community Park is popular among local and out of town visitors! It has two shelters available for use or rent: an open shelter with restrooms and picnic tables and an enclosed shelter with restrooms and picnic tables. This park also has both a baseball and softball field, which are home to the Tri-County Cavalier High School teams as well as the summer youth programs. You will also find newly resurfaced tennis courts on the west side of the park and a popular basketball court near the playground. There are walking/ biking trails that go throughout the woods behind the ball diamonds, around the soccer fields and back through the main park area. The soccer fields are used by Remington’s popular youth soccer program in the fall. The park has two wonderful playgrounds, an enclosed infant/toddler playground and a larger playground for children of all ages. The large hill south of the softball diamond is perfect for winter sledding! Shelters Reserve a Park Shelter SHELTER RENTAL RATES Shelter #1- $50 Shelter 1 is located on the west side of the Original Town Park (south of convenience stores) with parking available next to the shelter. It is an open shelter with restrooms and picnic tables. Recycling and trash cans are on site for use as well. Shelter #2- $50 Shelter 2 is located at the south entrance of the Community Park. Free parking for the shelter and the park is located beside the shelter. It is an open shelter with restrooms and picnic tables. Recycling and trash cans are on site for use as well. Shelter #3- $75 Shelter 3 is located nearest the Splash Pad. Access to the shelter is from the West entrance to the park. Free parking is available nearest the shelter and the Splash Pad. It is an enclosed shelter with roll up doors that can be opened for nice weather. There are restrooms and picnic tables in the shelter. Recycling and trash cans are on site for use as well. Contact the Town Hall at 219-261-2523 option 4. The Town Hall staff will be happy to make park shelter reservations for you or your organization. Reservation Form NOTICE No pets are allowed inside the fenced baseball and softball diamond at the community park, with the exception of service animals. Damage to the fields and failure to pick up animal waste despite signs posted in the parks has led the Park Board to this decision. In addition, the town of Remington has a tethered animal ordinance and allowing pets off leash, even inside the diamonds, violates this ordinance. Thank you, Remington Park Board

The amount of water you use in a month changes depending on how many showers are taken, how much laundry is done, if the yard is being watered, and so on. You will also notice a change in your bill if you have company for a long week-end, or your family visits for a period of time. This change is due to more showers, laundry, and general water usage. What are we charged for on the Remington utility bill? The charges that appear on the monthly Remington utility bill are for water, sewage, and trash removal. What is the cost for a water meter? The cost for the deposit for a home owner for a residential water meter is $100. The deposit cost is $120 for a business. The deposit is refunded if a resident pays their water bill on time for 24 consecutive months. What is the policy about dogs running at large in town? All dogs owned or maintained by persons living in the municipality or adjacent there to shall be confined at all times by their owners and shall not be allowed to run at large unless the owner accompanies the dog on a leash which is held by the owner. (Ordinance 21677, passed 2-16-77). Residents or town officials may call the county Animal Control office to report stray dogs. Where can I recycle?     Learn about Remington, Indiana, situated just 90 miles southeast of Chicago and 90 miles northwest of Indianapolis. ABOUT REMINGTON Situated just 90 miles southeast of Chicago and 90 miles northwest of Indianapolis, Remington is host to many local businesses and community organizations. Interstate 65 is just two miles to the east, and U.S. Rt 24 and U.S. Rt 231 pass through town. Remington boasts many homes and landmarks of historic note, with many types of architecture represented. Remington is in Carpenter Township, in Jasper County, Indiana. History The Town of Remington, Indiana was founded in the spring of 1860 and was a small farming community known at that time as Carpenter Station or Carpenter, after Carpenter's Creek. The name was later changed to Remington, perhaps the name of a local store owner. The railway was completed and known as the Logansport, Peoria & Burlington Railway. The depot was constructed in the fall of 1859, built 100 feet west of the crossing at Ohio Street. The depot was a small building, with 2 small rooms and a platform that was 100 feet long. Trains began running in January, 1860. On September 6, 1869 the town held their first meeting to elect a board of trustees.

COMMUNITY If the strength of a community is judged by the quality and quantity of relationships that bind it together, Remington is robustly healthy. From vibrant churches to active community organizations engaging in service and town improvements, there is a place for anybody who cares about their hometown to plug in. Local Organizations Remington Women's Giving Circle In its first year, the Remington Women's Giving Circle membership included 17 charter members, each pledging $100 or more per year. The giving circle has awarded grants to Remington Main Street, Fountain Park Chautauqua, Tri-County Art Department, The Town of Remington, Remington Carpenter Township Public Library, and the Jasper County Women's Endowment Fund. The organization works thru the Jasper Foundation. Troop #1278 Girl Scout Daisies Troop leader: Jami Barber Kindergarten girls from Remington, Wolcott and Brookston. Meets twice a month on Tuesdays at the Remington Library Tobias Center, 6:30-7:30 PM Cavalier Clovers 4-H Club Cavalier Clovers 4-H Club meets monthly January thru June at the Tri-County Primary School every 1st Monday of the month at 6: 30 PM. There are 56 registered members of this club. Remington Area Historical Society (RAHS) This community organization meets quarterly. Contact Don Pampel for further information at: pampel@ffni.com Tri-County Youth Soccer League The Tri-County Youth Soccer League was started in 2001 by parents in the Tri-County area. Each fall soccer players from ages 3 and up are organized into teams. The fields are located at the Remington Community Park. Practices are typically held on Monday and Thursday evenings with games on Saturday morning. Local sponsors are generous so that fees are kept to a minimum. The league is associated with SAY Soccer. Carpenter Country Clovers 4-H Club Carpenter Country Clovers 4-H Club meets on the second Monday of each month at the Roy & Fern Community Room at the library at 6:30 PM. This is the club that merged from the former Carpenter Clovers and the Country Clovers 4-H Clubs. Remington Food Pantry The Remington Food Pantry is located at 1 N Ohio St. The pantry is open on Thursdays 10:00-11:30 am and 5:30-7:00 pm. Each family receives a box of food according to their family size along with 2 meal packets to provide 2 healthy complete meals for them along with simple instructions on how to prepare those meals. They also will receive a voucher for milk to pick up at the local IGA store. We ask that you bring along your driver's license to show proof of residency as we serve the Tri-County School District. Each family is allowed to come 2x/month if they need the assistance. The pantry is operated by the Remington/Wolcott Ministerial Association. This consists of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Apostolic Christian Church, United Methodist Church, First Christian Church, Baptist Church, and Palestine Church in Wolcott. Each church provides volunteers to work each week. We are able to provide fresh items to our people because of the support of local business and organizations. Without their support it would not be possible for us to continue our stewardship. Troop #158 Boy Scouts Troop #158 Boy Scouts is open for boys of the Tri-County School Corporation. Contact Scoutmaster Jim Miller for more information. There is an additional Boy Scout Troop 159 currently for girls. Their leader is Tania Northup. Remington Lodge #351 Free and Accepted Masons Pack #3158 Cub Scouts Pack #3158 Cub Scouts is the local group for boys in the Tri-County School Corporation. Friends of the Remington Carpenter Township Public Library The Friends of the Remington Carpenter Township Public Library, Inc. is a group of concerned citizens who share the belief that a strong public library is a valuable intellectual and recreational resource in the community. Our library is tax-supported, but there are items and programs that are not included in the library's budget. The Friends of RCTPL, Inc. provide financial assistance for these needs. Meetings are held the 4th Monday of the month at 7pm at the library. Zeta Xi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa (Tri-Kappa) Tri-Kappa sorority meets monthly the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7 PM, raising funds annually with their food stand at the Fountain Park Chautauqua. The group helps CHAPS, Cheer Guild, Community Ambulance, Crisis Center, Fire Department, Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity, Hospice, Riley Children's Hospital, Remington / Wolcott Libraries, Youth Baseball and Soccer. Through the years the chapter has been able to contribute many items to the community such as equipment for the doctor's office, ambulance service, fire department, library, school system and has helped families in time of need. We have purchased items for the music and art departments at Tri-County. We have helped sponsor convocations of many types. And we support the local summer softball association. We believe in helping others any way that we can. Other philanthropic activities supported by our chapter include: Adopt-A-Highway, Adopt-A-Family, Adopt-A-Patient, Book of the Month-Remington, Cheer Guild, Fountain Park Hotel, Hoosier Salon, Honor Awards, Indianapolis Symphony, May Speech & Hearing Month, Remington Food Pantry, Remington Library, Riley Hospital Donations, Riley Telethon. The group raises funds through it's weekly night BINGO at the Lion's Club building. Each year, the group awards college scholarships to local high school seniors. The club is a chapter of the International Association of Lion's Clubs. American Legion Post 280 Local veterans enjoy visiting together at the local legion. The Remington American Legion Post 280 is located on South Railroad Street. They also support the deployment of members in the military from the local National Guard Armory.
